In our fast-paced, ever-demanding world, finding peace can sometimes feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. Yet, peace isn’t just a distant dream; it’s a powerful reality that can transform our lives from the inside out. Chapter Four of the book Persevering Power, explores how embracing peace can empower us to live more fully and intentionally. Here are three key takeaways that can help us all lean into the power of peace.
1. Finding Peace: True Peace Comes from Within
One of the most profound truths in this chapter is that real peace isn’t dependent on our external circumstances. Instead, it begins within us. As the chapter reminds us, “When things change inside you, things change around you.” This is a call to prioritize our inner world, nurturing a peace that can withstand the storms of life.
Mother Teresa exemplified this by maintaining a calm and joyful demeanor even in the face of tremendous challenges. Her secret? A deep, inner peace grounded in her humble faith. Humility is key to peace. The more your pride seeks to control the circumstances around you the more you will be controlled by those circumstances. Trust God and let go of pride and the need to control. You will find peace.
I love my sons. They are amazing young men of faith with significant reasons to be proud, but you’d find them incredibly humble. Joseph and Daniel introduce us to chapter four of the book and I appreciate introducing you to them.
2. Finding Peace: Silence and Stillness Are Essential for Peace
In a world filled with constant noise and distractions, finding time for silence and stillness is crucial as Joseph reminded us. Persevering Power encourages us to follow Jesus’ example: “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” It’s not just about physical rest but also about resting our minds and spirits. Taking time to unplug, sit in silence, and listen to God can rejuvenate our souls and give us the clarity and strength to face life’s demands.
I highly recommend moments of silence throughout your day. Take a walk and instead of listening to our podcast, Restore Justice, be quiet. I recently spoke with some volunteers of Administer Justice on how difficult it was to enter the challenges some of our neighbors face. They wanted to cry. Jesus wants to cry as well. Allow your heart to break for the things that break his heart but then get away to a quiet place to rejuvenate your soul.
3. Finding Peace: Faith Overcomes Fear
Finally, as Daniel reminds us in his video introduction, the chapter speaks to the power of faith in overcoming fear. When life feels overwhelming, and the future seems uncertain, it’s easy to become paralyzed by fear. Yet, this chapter reminds us that “the silence of faith must overcome the silence of fear.” By placing our trust in God, we can find peace even in the midst of life’s storms. Just as Jesus calmed the raging seas with the words “Be still,” He offers us the same peace to calm our anxious hearts.
Each month people needing legal help who cannot afford the high cost of a lawyer walk into one of more than 100 gospel justice centers in 20 states. Each is located in a church. Each is a beacon of light and hope, providing peace in a difficult circumstance. As one client recently remarked,
“I would like for everyone to know that if they have a legal issue where a professional opinion and guidance is needed, please reach out to Administer Justice. All of the people involved are truly professional and compassionate and will guide you through a difficult situation in your life. Peace is possible.”
Conclusion: Be intentional
Embracing the power of peace requires intentionality. It’s about fostering inner peace, making time for silence and stillness, and leaning on our faith to overcome fear. As you go about your week, remember that peace is not just the absence of trouble but the presence of God in the midst of it. Take a deep breath, unplug for a moment, and let the peace of God guard your heart and mind.
This chapter serves as a gentle reminder that peace is possible, and it begins with us. Let’s take the time to cultivate it, cherish it, and let it transform our lives.
